Total Cholesterol Health: A New Concept

Most of us have been told by doctors, drug companies, and the health media
that the key to lowering the risk of heart disease is to reduce our LDL (bad)
cholesterol. It is characterized as the villain that gunks up our arteries
and causes heart attacks. Well, this is only partly true; but at best, it is
a gross oversimplification of the cholesterol problem. At worst, it’s a myth
that lulls us all into a false sense of security about our cardiovascular
health by leading us to feel safe once we’ve dropped our bad cholesterol
count.

A broader view of cholesterol is needed which encompasses 6 key elements
affecting heart disease risk: LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, Triglycerides,
Oxidized LDL cholesterol, Homocysteine, and Inflammation. This view takes
into account the entire process in which cholesterol is transformed from a
harmless substance into dangerous plaque buildups in the arteries. Here are
summaries of each element….

1. LDL (stands for low density lipoprotein) cholesterol is NOT bad by itself.
In fact, it’s vital to life. Without it, none of us would live more than a
day. Cholesterol is used by the body to create various hormones, digestive
enzymes, and sheathing for nerve cells. Also, almost 80% of cholesterol is
produced by the liver. Only 20% comes from our food. So, for the most part,
cholesterol is not this “bad stuff” that comes from outside our bodies.

2. HDL (good) cholesterol, unlike LDL, is desirable. You want more of it in
your body because it transports bad cholesterol back to the liver for
processing.

So, we should NOT be focusing on just getting rid of all the cholesterol we
can. We should be trying to achieve Total Cholesterol Health in which HDL (
good) cholesterol is high enough, and LDL (bad) cholesterol is in a healthy
range. But, there’s still much more to cholesterol health than this.

3. Triglycerides are fat storage cells in your blood that increase when you
eat more fatty or processed foods, drink too much alcohol, or don’t get
enough exercise. Basically, your risk of heart disease goes up as your
triglyceride count rises. So, you want to lower your triglycerides as much
as you can. The cholesterol count done by your doctor measures triglycerides.

4. Oxidized LDL cholesterol is at the core of the problem. If LDL gets
oxidized by what’s known as free radicals (unstable molecules with extra
electrons that are produced normally by the body), it can set off a chain of
metabolic events that leads to plaque formation in the arteries. And when
plaques increase enough, they can cause blockages which can rupture and lead
to heart attacks, or even to strokes. Research has shown that the less
oxidized LDL cholesterol you have, the lower your risk of heart disease.

5. Homocysteine is a byproduct in our bodies produced when an essential amino
acid called methionine is broken down. It is common in dairy products,
canned foods, meat, and highly processed foods. The more of these foods you
eat, the more homocysteine will be produced. The body can deal with this
problem up to a point. B vitamins (B6, B12, Folic acid) are used to convert
homocysteine back into a harmless substance. But, if there is either too
much of it being produced, or the body is deficient in these B vitamins,
homocysteine will increase.

How is too much homocysteine a problem? Basically, it can damage the inner
walls of the arteries starting the process leading to the buildup of plaque.
Also, it can trigger LDL cholesterol to oxidize. The higher the level of
homocysteine, the greater the risk of heart attacks. There’s no level in the
blood that’s considered safe.

6. Inflammation is at the center of a lot of research related to heart
disease. Inflammation is a normal process in the body that is critical in
dealing with injuries. Once the injury is repaired, the inflammation ends.

However, when the inflammation process attacks healthy cells and tissues for
whatever reason, big health problems can result. If this continues
indefinitely, a “chronic” inflammation results, such as what can occur in our
arteries if the formation of plaque goes on long enough. Although, it is not
known for sure how inflammation triggers plaques to rupture causing heart
attacks, it IS known to be a serious indicator of heart health problems.

In addition, inflammation is believed to be the core reason for many
degenerative diseases including arthritis, Alzheimers, fibromyalgia, macular
degeneration, Parkinson’s disease, and even cancer.

The bottom line is that you need to address all six of these risk-factors to

Use of stem cells for diabetes

Diabetes is a syndrome characterised by disordered metabolism and inappropriately high blood sugar resulting from either low levels of the hormone insulin or from abnormal resistance to insulin's effects coupled with inadequate levels of insulin secretion to compensate. The symptoms usually are excessive urine production, excessive thirst and increased fluid intake, and blurred vision; these symptoms are likely absent if the blood sugar is only mildly elevated.

The current best medical practice for those with type 1 diabetes includes insulin by multiple daily injections or continuous pump infusion. Recently developed insulin analogues have helped to more closely approximate normal glucose homeostasis and have been especially beneficial in reducing hypoglycaemia while tightly controlling blood glucose. Glargine insulin provides nearly 24 hours of low level basal insulin activity, while meal-time peaks in activity can be mimicked by administration of rapid acting insulin analogues such as lispro and aspart insulins. Delivery of insulin by continuous infusion pump allows even finer tuning of insulin activity.
Although current insulin delivery modalities are quite good and improving, limitations still exist. Frequent self-monitoring of blood glucose is still required, as is estimation of insulin doses based on multiple factors that might affect future glycaemic changes.

Stem cells offer a potential solution to the opposed requirements of cell proliferation and function. In theory, these cells can proliferate in an undifferentiated state and then be converted to take on required metabolic functions through genetic and epigenetic manipulations. Stem cells have been isolated from embryonic tissues as well as a variety of fetal and adult sources, including umbilical cord blood, bone marrow, central nervous system, liver and pancreas. One potential advantage of adult stem cells is that they could be used for autologous transplantation. This might preclude the use of immunosuppressive medications to prevent allorejection. However, recurrent autoimmune-mediated destruction targeting cell proteins would remain problematic.

Xenogeneic cells are a potential source of cells for transplantation therapy. Because pigs regulate glucose in a similar physiological range to that of humans, and because porcine insulin has been used as an exogenous source of insulin, pigs are generally considered the most promising donor animal. However, islets from xenogeneic pancreata are more immunogenic than allogeneic islets.

How Hypnotherapy Helps Phobias

People can be afraid of a wide range of things and what can be totally acceptable to one person can be quite panic provoking to another.

Some of the fears I see most often in my practice are:

Animals
Being alone
Blood
Small or enclosed spaces
Dark places
Death
Heights
Injections/Needles
Open spaces
Snakes
Spiders
Travel
Trains
Water

Some unusual ones:

Yellow (the colour)
Red cars
Men with beards
Apples

What is a phobia?

A phobia is any persistent fear of a specific stimulus object or situation. Phobia is from the Greek to fear or dread. It is more than a simple fear, or a being afraid. It is to be totally terrified of the stimulus. When presented with a phobia problem by a client, I always begin by finding out if it is a fear they have, or a phobia. If their problem is spiders for instance, then can they imagine themselves holding a spider on their hand if they are rewarded with £100? What about £500, and so on. If they could bear the spider for a large amount of money, even just for a few seconds, they do not have a phobia, but rather a fear. The person with a phobia of spiders would not be able to bear to touch one for any amount of money or any other reward. Some people are obsessive with their phobia. This means, they can’t even bear to think of the stimulus and it will likely be totally controlling their lives.

Another complication is that a client can present with a fear/phobia of flying as an example. However, the skilled therapist, on exploring this fear/phobia with the client, may find the fear/phobia is actually about being enclosed, or locked in. Perhaps it might be a fear/phobia of dying, not being able to breath on an aircraft, or something else connected with the aircraft or leaving their own area/country etc, but not actually the flying itself.

What has caused the phobia?

A client will often say that nothing has caused the phobia they have, it just started, they’ve always been afraid of dogs, etc. If one person is afraid of dogs and another isn’t, then clearly there is a difference between the two. One person has either been exposed to some causal event which has been repressed in the subconscious mind, or has learned to be afraid from a parent or other authority figure at some time earlier in life. The causal event may not have been very traumatic at the time, but the young mind will have seen it out of the context that would be understood by a more mature mind in later years. It may have caused an emotional response and/or motor actions to be locked away, repressed, and the emotion and possible motor responses will have been locked away and anchored to the event. The subconscious mind can often set up a kind of false instinct, whereby any sign of the stimulus, or even something resembling it, or associated with it, may cause a phobic reaction, and then the body’s flight or fight response will kick in and the individual may begin to panic…panic attack.

Hypnotherapy to relieve phobias

The first thing the skilled hypnotherapist will do, is to work with the client to discover the causal event, and once found, to desensitise the client from it. Once this has been achieved, then hypnotic suggestion, metaphor and possibly Neuro-Linguistic Programming will be used to create a new template for the client so they can see the previously feared situation, object or circumstance in a new and non threatening light, through a new lens as it where. If the causal event, or events are not found and the emotion not released, then the phobia may just resurface later with more intensity than before if that is possible. The person with a phobia will need to be helped to find and review the trigger situation, to see it with an adult maturity and understanding, and to then see the cause in a different way and with a different and better understanding. The mind can be reprogrammed to see things in a different way and to accept situations as normal that would previously have been viewed as threatening.

How many sessions of therapy will be required?

How many sessions will be needed to release a person from their phobia will depend upon many things, not least, the clients personality type, maturity, desire to overcome the phobia, and of course, how deep seated the phobia is and how long it has been in place. However, the average for people I see is about 3-4 sessions. This can be much longer in some cases, especially where full blown panic attacks are occurring at seemingly random times and in diverse places.

Please always see your doctor first and foremost before you contact or visit any therapist and tell him/her about any symptoms you may have, such as, headache, soreness in limbs, racing heart, dizziness, sweating, blurred vision, a feeling of unrealness, etc. Although these are all common for someone suffering from a fear, phobia, or indeed from a panic attack, organic causes should always be fully checked out by a medical professional in the first instance.

When consulting a hypnotherapist, I advise that you ensure they are a Clinical Hypnotherapist and that they belong to a professional body such as one of the following:

Lose Fat, Lose Weight - The Four Essential Steps

Welcome to the wonderful world of weight loss. We are about to share with you the four essential steps you should be aware of if you want to lose fat and reduce your weight.

This article discusses the first step. You'll find links to other pages which continue the story, at the end of this article.

STEP ONE - Understand How Weight Loss Occurs

If you're an overweight young adult, you probably eat more than you need. Your body requires a certain number of calories to sustain itself, and if you consume more than that number, you will put on weight. If you eat less calories than you expend, you will lose weight - it's really that simple. Don't let anyone persuade you differently. Unless you have some kind of illness, this technique will work for you. So take on board what you're about to read, talk about it with your physician, and adopt it if he or she approves.

The equation identified above is complicated by the reality that your body doesn't want you to consume less than it needs - it will think you're starving. If you go on a severely restricted diet, your body will do a number of annoying things, such as giving you hunger pangs, causing you to feel wearied and sluggish, finding the energy it needs from your muscle tissue in addition to your fat deposits, etc. Consequently, you shouldn't attempt to lose weight by dieting alone.

It is essential that you exercise as well as eating less. When you exercise, your body receives the message that you are still going well and so will be triggered to maintain your lean body mass and live off your fat. If you consume less calories than your body requires, but don't go below your requirements very much, and get adequate exercise so that your body continues and burns even more fat to do so, then you will slim down nicely.

A pound of fat represents about 3500 calories of stored energy. In order to lose a pound of fat, you must use 3500 more calories than you take in. It's better not to do this over the period of just one day or you'd probably harm yourself, and your body would in all likelihood have some extreme response which would not include you losing any real weight. It's more beneficial to spread this out over a week, so that you aspire to exceed your caloric requirements by 3500 to 7000 calories per week. This will result in weight loss of one to two pounds per week. It isn't healthy to attempt to lose more than two pounds in a week. If you do try to do so you're unlikely to be successful.

Let's suppose you would like to lose two pounds per week. To do so, you need to work out how many calories a person of your age, sex, and weight usually requires in a day, subtract 500 from that amount, and follow a diet that provides you with that many calories. For example, if you would normally need 3000 calories in a day, you would stick to a 2500 calorie per day diet. Then you work out how much exercise an individual of your weight would need to do to burn 500 calories per day, and you get off your butt and do it. The result is simple. 500 fewer calories consumed plus 500 more calories used equals a 1000 calorie per day shortfall, which, over the course of a week adds up to 7000 calories, or two pounds. Your mileage may vary, but there's no avoiding it. If your body is consuming fewer calories than it's using, something's got to go.

That's how it goes. So now you just have to learn how to eat less and exercise and you will definitely lose some weight. Then you want to know how to keep it off.

2.) Gently guide the floss between your teeth with a rubbing motion.

3.) Once the floss nears your gum line curve the floss against one
tooth in a 'C' shape. Slide it gently in the space between you tooth
and gum.

4.) While keeping the floss against the tooth, gently, with an up and
down motion, move the floss away from the gum.

5.) Repeat as needed.

6.) Remember to floss between all of your teeth, even the hard to reach
ones in the back of your mouth. Also floss the back of the last
teeth.

7.) Remember this is a gentle motion. Do not use a frontward, backward
sawing motion. That can cause injury and prove to be painful.

Skin cancer is a malignant growth on the skin which can have many causes. Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The two most common types are basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of cancer, with about a million new cases estimated in the U.S. each year. Basal cells line the deepest layer of the epidermis. Basal cell carcinomas are malignant growths--tumors--that arise in this layer. Cancers caused by UV exposure may be prevented by avoiding exposure to sunlight or other UV sources, wearing sun-protective clothes, and using a broad-spectrum sun screen. Skin cancers are the fastest growing type of cancer in the United States.

The sun is responsible for over 90 percent of all skin cancers. The most common sign of skin cancer is a change on the skin, such as a growth or a sore that won't heal. Sometime there may be a small lump. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It affects deeper layers of the skin and has the greatest potential to spread to other tissues in the body. It is one of the rarer types of skin cancer but causes the majority of skin cancer related deaths. It is more common in caucasian populations living in sunny climates than other groups. Melanoma can also appear on the body as a new mole. Men most often get melanoma on the trunk (the area of the body between the shoulders and hips) or on the head or neck; women most often get melanoma on the arms and legs.

Squamous cell carcinoma is a form of cancer of the carcinoma. This type of cancer is characterized by red, scaly skin that becomes an open sore. Light-colored skin and a history of sun exposure are even more important in predisposing to this kind of cancer than to basal cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma affects more than 200,000 people in the United States alone every year. Smoking is a significant risk factor. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is often caused by long term exposure to the sun. Other risk factors include sun exposure, radiation therapy, exposure to carcinogens, chronic skin irritation or inflammation, genetic diseases, and presence of premalignant lesions. Squamous cell carcinoma is usually developed in the epithelial layer of the skin.

Treatment for skin cancer and the precancerous skin lesions known as actinic keratoses varies, depending on the size, type, depth and location of the lesions. Radiation therapy and cryotherapy can provide adequate control of the disease; both, however, have lower overall cure rates than surgery. Alternative medicine approaches that endeavor to optimize the capabilities of the immune system against cancer are especially attractive. Avoiding sun exposure in susceptible individuals is the best way to lower the risk for all types of skin cancer. Regular surveillance of susceptible individuals, both by self-examination and regular physical examination, is also a good idea for people at higher risk. People who have already had any form of skin cancer should have regular medical checkups.

Treatment Options for Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma that has become malignant can be difficult to treat for quite a few reasons. As with all cancers, the disease becomes more and more difficult to treat as it progresses. In addition, because mesothelioma can remain undiagnosed for decades, doctors often do not discover the disease until it has reached advanced stages. Adding to this difficulty are the facts that mesothelioma does not usually respond to typical cancer treatments, and the fact that it effects the lining of vital organs means that surgical options can be very difficult. Finally, treatment can be made more difficult because of the demographics of mesothelioma victims, with a large majority of patients being men over the age of 50, where advanced age makes some more radical treatments too dangerous.

All of this means that even newly diagnosed mesothelioma patients sometimes are given a very bad chance of recovery by their doctors. Statistics on such issues can be difficult to acquire, but some British doctors and scientists have suggested that some 10 will live five years or longer. For patients in the first stage, 50% live for at least two more years. But doctors can be wrong, and a mesothelioma diagnosis is not necessarily a death sentence. Famed scientist Stephen Jay Gould lived with peritoneal mesothelioma for nearly 20 years. Eventually, he died from another kind of cancer.

There are four stages of malignant mesothelioma, which measure how far the disease has progressed. How a patient's mesothelioma is treated depends largely on which stage he or she is in when the disease is found.

* Stage I: Localized mesothelioma that exists only in the lungs, the diaphragm or the pericardial lining.

* Stage II: Advanced mesothelioma that has spread into the lymph nodes of the chest.

* Stage III: Advanced mesotheioma that has spread into the wall of the chest, the center of the chest, the lining of the heart and the diaphragm. Stage III malignant mesothelioma may or may not have spread to the lymph nodes.

* Stage IV: Advanced mesothelioma that has spread far from the chest and abdomen into other organs.

Surgery

Patients with Stage I or milder Stage II mesothelioma are generally offered one or more of the conventional cancer treatments: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. For early-stage patients, surgery for mesothelioma aims to cure the disease by literally cutting the cancer out of the patient's body. The most common type of surgery for pleural mesothelioma is a pleurectomy/decortication, which is where doctors remove all or part of the tissues lining the lungs and chest cavity. If doctors find that they can't remove the cancer without removing the lung underneath those tissues, they may remove one lung as well; this is called a pneumonectomy. A more radical type of surgery for pleural mesothelioma is called an extrapleural pneunonectomy (EPP). In the case of an EPP, surgeons will remove parts of one lung, the pleura, the diaphragm, and the lining of the heart. These are quite dangerous and difficult types of surgery, which will not be recommended lightly by doctors or surgeons.

Patients with peritoneal mesothelioma -- the kind that affects the abdomen -- may be offered cytoredutive surgery. In this surgery, doctors are trying to remove all of the cancerous tissue they can find in the abdomen and gut. They may also choose to do a peritonectomy -- removal of the entire lining of the abdomen. Again, this is not an easy surgery and may not be possible for everyone, but it has been successful in some patients. Patients with pericardial mesothelioma are not generally offered surgery.

Radiation and Chemotherapy

In addition to or instead of surgery, doctors may offer an early-stage mesothelioma patient chemotherapy, radiation or both. Radiation and chemotherapy are designed to kill the cancer cells without killing the patient. Unfortuantely, in order to kill the cancerous cells, these treatments often kill healthy cells as well. This is why cancer patients often lose their hair, have trouble eating and feel generally weak and sick during treatment. Doctors who prescribe chemotherapy or radiation may also suggest dietary supplements or other measures to control these symptoms.

Chemotherapy is any treatment where patients are given chemical medication specifically designed to attack the cancer cells as the undergo cell division. The drug is swallowed or injected into the bloodstream regularly over a period of weeks or months, in cycles that give a patient some recovery time in between treatments. A patient could stay at home, only requiring visits to a doctor's office for treatments; sometimes, they can even have the treatments at home. In some cases, doctors may choose to apply chemotherapy drugs directly to the cancerous tissue; this requires surgery, so patients must check into a hospital. There are many different kinds of chemotherapy drugs, and scientists are trying to develop better ones every day.

Radiation therapy seeks to kill the cancer cells with high-energy rays of radiation, such as x-rays, that stop them from growing. With external-beam radiation, patients will be subjected to directed rays of radiation directed as specific parts of the body affected by cancer. This treatment lasts about 30 minutes a day and is given in the exact same way each day over a period of weeks. In internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy), doctors put a container of radioactive material next to the cancerous tissue, using surgery or an existing body cavity. Some will be left in the body; others will be removed and replaced. Lastly, radiopharmaceuticals are sometimes used to administer radiation treatments, with the drugs being either injected, inserted into a body cavity or swallowed.
